Complex initial examinations of an infertile couple in the Sanatorium for the Treatment of Infertility – SPLN

Assisted Reproduction is a rapidly developing multidisciplinary medical discipline that aims at helping an infertile couple to conceive and bear the full term. It includes the collaboration of gynaecologists, embryologists, andrologists, geneticists, immunologists, haematologists, and professionals in many other medical branches. All the procedures, in which we manipulate with the gametes or embryos in order to achieve pregnancy or to improve the preconditions for achieving it, are the assisted reproduction methods. Over the past decade, infertility treatment, especially assisted reproduction, has made significant advances in the world and in this country. In the treatment of infertility, we do not differ from the neighbouring countries by possibilities or the success rate.

Infertility is the inability to conceive (become pregnant). According to the World Health Organization, infertility is a disease to be treated. An infertile couple is considered the couple who, during regular unprotected intercourse, does not reach pregnancy during one year. Worldwide statistics show that female infertility accounts to woman in one-third, to man in one third, and in other cases the causes of infertility are with both of the partners. We always treat the couple, both man and woman. We can only estimate the number of infertile couples, assuming that about 12-20% of couples suffer from infertility.

For infertile couples, we perform comprehensive initial examinations including laboratory examinations (blood collection for hormonal profile and serological examination), cervical smear for sexually transmitted diseases, ultrasound examination of the female genital organs, and a spermiogram in men. Upon completion of the initial examinations, expert consultation and, if necessary, individual specialized laboratory and specialist examinations follow, most commonly endoscopic ones (laparoscopy, hysteroscopy), contrast ultrasonography, urological, immunological, and genetic examinations.
